The Modern Pentathlon Riding event is one of the trickiest events in the Modern Pentathlon. Points are lost by the bundle in this event. The riding, which is equestrian show jumping involves jumping over set hurdles not greater in height then 1.2 metres.
The course only has a length of around 400 metres, which has 15 jumps and 12 hurdles. One being a double hurdle and another being a triple hurdle. The way the event was created, was that the rider must use a horse that is foreign to him or her, so this is why the horses are supplied by the organisers of the event.
The horses are allocated to the riders 20 minutes before the event starts. They do get to warm up in that 20 minutes and do a few practice jumps and hurdles. They can practice up to five hurdles before they have to ride.
Once the event starts, the rider has a set amount of time he or she has to complete the course in. For every 350 metres in length the course is, the rider gets 1 minute to complete it in. A standard time is around 1 minute 17 seconds and that is worth 1200 Pentathlon points.
For every mistake that rider makes, they lose points. Every time a rider knocks down a jump, they lose 28 points. Every time a horse refuses to jump an obstacle, it costs the rider 40 Pentathlon points and if the horse knocks down the obstacle after refusal, its 60 points.
After the horse refuses to jump the obstacle twice, the rider must go to the next obstacle. For every obstacle not jumped the rider loses 80 points
If a rider falls from the horse, they lose 40 points. If they fall again, their ride is terminated and they lose another 300 points.
For every second they are above the standard course time, it costs them 4 points. You can only be 60 seconds above the standard time otherwise the ride is stopped and it costs the rider 240 points in deductions and 80 points for every jump they miss.
