Modern Pentathlon has been an Olympic sport since 1912. Baron Pierre de Coubertin was the man who founded the Modern Pentathlon and championed it to be in the Olympic games. He was reported to have said that the Modern Pentathlon would test a persons moral qualities as much as his physical abilities.

The Modern Pentathlon consists of five different disciplines competed on one day. They are,

* Pistol Shooting

* Epee Fencing

* Equestrian

* Swimming

* Cross Country Running

Pentathlon scoring can be a bit confusing. The points for the first four events are totalled up and this determines the starting position for the final event the Cross Country Run. The leading point score starts the run first, with the rest following in intervals after him according their points tally.

Due to the handicap, the winner of the complete Pentathlon is the person who finishes the race first who gets gold, and second and third get silver and bronze.

Some say the Modern Pentathlon is the true embodiment of the Olympic games, as the five Olympic rings represent the 5 sports involved in the Modern Pentathlon. This is why the cries for the Modern Pentathlon to be taken out of the Olympic games have been unsuccessful so far.

There are now both men and women competitions for the Modern Pentathlon at the Olympics and other sanctioned Modern Pentathlon events.
